Lessons learned from first virtual meet/Sign Up Genius

Hi Marlins,

We had a great first meet last week! The meet was a trial run for us in terms of figuring out how a virtual meet will run, the type and number of volunteers we will need, the length of the meet, etc.

What did we learn from the first meet? We need your help!

We have created a Sign Up Genius for volunteers. Each family is required to volunteer at each meet attended. Any empty positions will be randomly assigned the day before each meet. We strongly encourage you to use the Genius, so you can select a position that fits best for you.

Our trained officials and timers (Adolphsen, Manning, Desai, DenBrok, Eckhardt, Gerry) do not need to use the Genius as their role is recurring.

If your position is a shared position or your spouse/friend can fill in for a moment, you may slip away to watch your swimmer compete while volunteering. More volunteer details can be found on the Genius description.

Other feedback from the meet:

Swimmers need to stay in the bullpen area and should not sit on the pool deck with parents. Why? They need to be easily found, so the meet moves along. If a swimmer is not in the bullpen when his event is called, he will miss his event. And he will be sad 😥

Moving forward, we will have two parent volunteers supervising the bullpen area. If you have a small child and worry about leaving him, the bullpen position may be a good fit for you. Children can have entertainment in the bullpen- soft ball, book,  tablet, game, etc. They can also have blankets, tents and chairs.

Our bullpen/pool gate was locked the first meet. This unfortunately slowed things down. It will be unlocked for the meet this Thursday.

Arm graffiti- in addition to events/times/lanes, please write your swimmer's last name on her back in Sharpie. This helps the bullpen and merge volunteers quickly identify swimmers as needed. Also, make sure your swimmer knows her age group and where to find the event info on her arm.
