JDRF Fundraiser- June 9 Home Meet

Quick reminder: No Practice on Monday, May 30.

The Marlins are doing a fundraiser at our June 9 Home meet benefiting JDRF again this year. The mission of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications through support and research.

T1D is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.  You can't get T1D from eating too much candy.  You can't prevent T1D.  It can't be controlled with diet and exercise like type 2 diabetes. Managing T1D is a 24/7 job.  You have to check your blood sugar (by finger pricks) before every meal, change in activity level, or when you just don't feel right.  You have to try to act like a pancreas, calculating how much insulin you need constantly, as well as additional amounts you need for everything you ingest.  When your blood glucose is high, you need more insulin; when it's low, you need less insulin (all through injections or an insulin pump).  Exercise, temperature, stress, illness, hormones, all affect your blood glucose and amounts of insulin you need.  A normal pancreas takes care of this naturally.

We're looking for prize donations to use for our fundraising raffle.  If you have a business where you could donate a gift card, basket, service, etc. or if you would be willing to donate movie tickets, sports event tickets, any gift card (like i-tunes, ice cream, movies, target, toys r us, etc) or any type of prize, please contact Charlotte DenBrok at [email protected] or 770-855-8415.  Anything would be greatly appreciated!

We'll also have a bake sale at the fundraiser, so please consider baking too!

Thanks so much in advance!

Go Marlins!
